Sugar push
A six-count push-and-anchor pattern in open position: walk, walk, triple, anchor. It builds compression and a clear stretch.
Walk, walk, triple, anchor (1 2 3&4 5&6)
Swing Hall
The sugar push is best known as the basic six-count pattern of West Coast Swing. It is included here because swing dancers meet the same walk walk, triple, anchor idea in several swing styles, and it is a good way to feel compression and stretch. Many Lindy Hop teachers do not teach it under this name.
A beginner pattern for feeling connection: the follower walks in, the leader stays, and the stretch afterwards sends the follower back out.
- Walk the first two counts with small, confident steps.
- Leader: keep the arm low and stay in place so the follower has something to connect to.
- Follower: on three and four let the compression send you back instead of stepping back by yourself.
- Settle the anchor step on five and six before the next pattern.
