Triple step
Three steps in two beats: quick, quick, slow. The light, bouncing travel step that links the rock steps together.
Quick-quick-slow (3 & 4, 5 & 6)
Swing Hall
Triple rhythms are a hallmark of swing. Dancers of the 1930s and 40s combined them with Charleston patterns, and the quick-quick-slow rhythm is shared with other swing dances such as East Coast Swing. Many teachers describe it as the way to fill the time between rock steps.
The workhorse of the six-count and eight-count basics (counts 3&4, 5&6 or 7&8). In the swing out it carries the partners around the circle.
- Say “step-step-step” out loud, with the first two steps quick and the third one landing on the beat.
- Do triples in place first, then travel one step-length to each side.
- Add a small bounce: the knees give a little on each beat.
- Alternate the starting foot every time you repeat.
